Forestside Sprocket Rockets.

April 23, 2015

The Sprocket Rocket programme was originally developed by BMX Australia and has been modified by Cycling Ireland. The programme presents young riders with the opportunity to learn fundamental cycling skills that are suitable for their age, physical development and interest.

Forestside is working in association with Cycling Ireland to present a brand new Sprocket Rocket scheme. This is a pilot programme working with St.Ita's primary school. 11 children will participate over the next 10 weeks during the P7 Pupils’ quiet period now that their transfer tests have finished.

The scheme aims to provide children with more confidence on their bikes and improve cornering, braking and balance skills. Sessions take place every Tuesday from the 21st of April until end of June. It is held after school from 3-4pm in the multi-storey carpark at Forestside. If successful the scheme will be happening again next year with the possibility of more schools taking part.

We have 3 fully qualified Sprocket Rocket trainers on site. The first programme will qualify the kids at level 1, but future courses will develop them up to level 2 which includes on road tuition to improve their safety skills for riding in the city. We also have lots of further opportunities for interested children as they can progress to Team Forestside youth squad, then the Lite Lite team and eventually Team Forestside. We are also in the process of developing cycling facilities at Knockbreda Football Club so if cycling is your thing the possibilities within Team Forestside are endless.

The participating children have all paid £20 which provides full insurance and tuition, and on completion of the course all the kids will receive a helmet, logbook, certificate and a hi vis vest.

Tuesdays first session received fantastic feedback from parents and kids alike and is already starting to develop their confidence and bike skills.

Anyone interested in participating in next year’s scheme please contact lee@forestside.co.uk We’d love to hear from you.
