My latest male style crush is BBC’s Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch- probably the most sartorially influential TV detective since Don Johnson rocked that pastel blazer in Miami Vice. As a fan of Sherlock Holmes (I have the televisual taste of a middle-aged man) I wasn’t sure how it would transfer into the 21st century but I am a fan of the show, and in particular, Sherlock’s wardrobe.

His style is classic but modern, a lean silhouette with a theatrical flourish, which is usually achieved with a swish of his coat tails, evoking the idea of a cape- a nod to the traditional Sherlock Victorian garb. I asked my pal, menswear designer and stylist, Keith Houston, for his tips on achieving the look:  'The key to obtaining Sherlock's modern twist on Victoriana is all in the tailoring - sweeping lapels, crisp collars, and slim lines. Colours should be muted and harmonising, while fabrics should be understated micro-structures to give just enough interest without looking garish.'

The coat worn in the BBC series is a £1350 Belstaff trenchcoat, for which a waiting list had accumulated by the end of the first series. For those you not on the waiting list or without a grand to spend on a coat, I have tracked down this gorgeous overcoat from Marks and Spencer with traditional pocket detailing and velvet collar. This slim fit single button suit from River Island will give a sharp, clean look and the white shirt will lift the sombre palette. A fringed scarf and leather gloves finish the look. Deerstalker optional.... ;)
